Nest x Yale Smart Door Lock

The Nest x Yale lock has revolutionized home automation. For instance, I am the type of person to try and make one trip carrying all the groceries from the car to the kitchen. Instead of going back for multiple trips, I would rather overload my arms with grocery bags. There is nothing worse than arriving at the door with eight bags looped around each of my arms, only to remember the keys are in my back pocket.

The Nest X Yale Smart Door Lock provides a solution for multiple scenarios besides my grocery example. So, when I saw this smart lock, I knew I had to purchase it. After having it for quite a few months, I know the ins and outs of the lock, and am coming to you today with an honest Nest x Yale lock review.

Benefits and Downsides of the Nest x Yale Lock

The Look and Feel

The Nest x Yale Smart Lock comes in oil-rubbed bronze, satin nickel, or polished brass with a touch keypad. At first glance, the look of the sleek, and modern the lock was impressive, especially the small front panel with the light up keypad.

On the inside of the door shows a two-tone design with a panel covering the electronic board and batteries. The tamper-proof lock will alert you when batteries are low and will lock if you run out of battery. Then, you can quickly charge the lock with a standard 9 volt battery for your peace of mind and convenience.

One thing I am not a fan of is how bulky it looks on the back of my door. However, I have no problem overlooking this small issue because this lock has proven to be very functional and reliable for me.

Below is an unboxing of the product in case you would like to see what the box includes, before ordering the product. This Nest x Yale Lock review should also give you pretty good insight into everything you can expect!

The Installation

Installation can be time consuming for home home products and most of the time, it’s easier to hire someone. However, it was a pleasant suprise to find out that Nest provides an automated voice walkthrough as you install the lock.

The installation of the smart lock is relatively simple. It was one of the easiest installations of a smart home product I have ever done and only took me 20 minutes.

It was as simple as installing the batteries and allowing the voice prompt to direct me on how to carefully install the lock. Then I just had to download the Nest Application via smartphone, scan the bar-code, and create my master pin. However, I did need to purchase the Nest Connect device for the lock to work properly, which is a smart hub for an extra $30.

Next in this Nest x Yale lock review, I will cover compatibility with other smart home ecosystems.

Compatibility

When I found out that the Nest x Yale lock was not compatible with Alexa, I was hesitant to purchase it. However, the smart lock is compatible with Android, iOS, and Google Assistant. It is also completely compatible with the entire Nest ecosystem. With the Nest Connect, all my Nest devices link together and the inability to connect with my Alexa was no longer an issue for me.

Product Features

I have many different product features I want to mention in this Next x Yale lock review, but I am going to stick with the main points.

First, I love the concept of keyless entry and how seamless it is to enter my home. I never have to worry about forgetting or losing my key or hope that my back slider is open when I am locked out. Even if I can’t find my phone, I can just type the code in on the keypad.

Next, I really enjoy one-touch locking. I can leave the house, and I only have to press a single button to know that my home is locked and secure. Or, if I forget to lock my door, I can simply lock it from my phone.

Auto-lock has also been a handy feature for me. When I am in a rush or simply don’t want to have to worry about locking my door, I can set auto-lock to lock my door after a set amount of time. There is the choice to set auto-lock for 10 seconds, 1 minute, or 5 minutes after I have left the house. If I’m still worried that it isn’t locked, I can just check my Nest App for peace of mind.

Other Door Locks: Which Is The Best Option?

Preference in smart door locks varies from person to person. There are other great smart locks on the market such as Schlage Z-wave, which will tie you into the Z-Wave ecosystem. So, if you’ve already invested in the Z-wave ecosystem and want full compatibility, the Schlage Z-wave smart lock will be a better option for you.

If you don’t want to tie yourself into the Nest ecosystem, but still want a smart lock, then the August Smart Lock will be the best option for you. However, the app won’t let you see or control other smart home security devices.

Overall, I have yet to find an app that is as clean and reliable as the Nest App. I have full control of all my Nest devices and have never had an issue.

The final thing to cover in this Nest x Yale lock review is whether the smart lock is worth it or not.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?

The Nest x Yale Smart Door Lock has become a supplement of carrying around my house keys. I no longer have to worry about having to leave a key under the mat for my dog walker or friends who frequently stop by. Even my parents who are brand new to smart home technology can use this lock with no problems.

The price tag might seem a little high at first-glance, but it is well worth the money. You’re paying for an outstanding, high-functioning and extremely useful product that will make a huge difference in your everyday life.

The Nest x Yale Lock is worth it, and I would recommend it to anyone who asks. If you’re interested in the lock, you can purchase it here.
